Memorial Day

As another Memorial Day passes, we honor those who gave their lives standing up for our country. Black Americans have a distinguished place in the ranks of the fallen, because our sacrifices often occurred during points in history when the ideals we fought for abroad were denied to us here at home.

Memorial Day was an excellent time for Americans to consider whether they really have what it takes to establish and preserve a democracy. It is no easy task. Countless citizens have given their lives in the effort. And there are many who have given their best effort and not received the basic benefits.

Growing up, Brenda Samuels knew her father, Jose Santiago, was a big deal in the military. But as a lieutenant colonel with the 82nd Airborne Division, a unit that specialized in covert operations, he wasn’t at liberty to discuss with his family the operations in which he was involved.
