For families in Randolph, taking their kids on a trip to the doctor is often a trek. In the town, which has little to no regular pediatric care, even something as routine as a school sports physical can turn from a simple health care visit into an all-day affair.

When the announcement came that Dorchester’s Carney Hospital was set to close on an expedited, 36-day timeline, community members expressed concerns that the loss of the neighborhood’s only hospital would increase the burden on surrounding health organizations and increase the time it takes for patients to access care.

Over the past 13 years, under the leadership of Sandra Cotterell, the Codman Square Health Center saw strong growth in its budget and operations. Now, with Cotterell’s long-planned retirement, the center’s new CEO, Dr. Guy Fish — only the third CEO in the center’s history — is looking to keep up that momentum as he takes the helm.
