“Beautiful, bustling, and Black”—that was how author, attorney and activist Hannibal B. Johnson described the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in his book “Black Wall Street: From Riot to Renaissance in Tulsa’s Historic Greenwood District.”

Award-winning Boston-based journalist Carmen Fields grew up in a house full of music. Her father, Ernest (Ernie) Lawrence Fields, was a trombonist, pianist, musical arranger and bandleader who toured in the Southern United States with an orchestral territory band.

In the latter part of the 18th century, the Continental Congress established schools essentially to erase the culture of Native Americans.
