In the United States, 42 million people are living in poverty. There are 7.3 million women in this country who are single moms and almost 40% of households headed by single mothers are experiencing poverty.

At City Hall last week, Mayor Michelle Wu unveiled her plan to mitigate worsening conditions at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard, which has in recent years become an open-air drug market where many struggling with homelessness and addiction have flocked.

Despite America’s great success in business, poverty is still a discredit to the nation. Conservative pundits make the rate of poverty acceptable by creating the fiction that poverty is a Black affliction.
