English High School

Dr. Robert S. Peterkin, brilliant educator and tireless defender of the rights of children, particularly children of color, died in Boston on Dec. 23, 2024. 

The mural of Enoch Woodhouse II at Logan Airport informs visitors of the unique character of Roxbury’s aging generation of Black men who are now in their 80s and 90s or have already made the final trip home. Woodhouse, 95, is a stalwart patriot with an unshakeable awareness of the right to his place in the world.

Founded in 1821, English High School was created by the Boston School Committee, who had the novel idea that education should be free and accessible in the Commonwealth capitol, and who wanted an alternative to existing Latin schools offering a religious and classical curriculum to students.
