As drivers sought to head home or to evening activities on June 7, the music and chatter of buskers at Faneuil Hall mixed with the chants of youth activists as protesters shut down the street below City Hall, calling on Mayor Michelle Wu to preserve updates in the city budget that would increase access to youth jobs and housing.

Last Wednesday, the Boston City Council Ways and Means Committee met for a hearing to discuss modifications to this year’s proposed budget — a meeting that highlighted the newness of the current budget process, which gives councilors increased influence over spending decisions

Come Election Day, voters will be able to weigh in on how the city sets its budget. Ballot Question 1 looks to amend the city charter, changing the way the budget process works in order to shift some power from the mayor’s office to the City Council.
