Friday’s Boston Celtics win over the Charlotte Hornets at TD Garden was a sweet victory for the team, and a big moment of celebration for another group of basketball players, too.

Three Boston high school teams made impressive runs to state titles in tournament play over the weekend — the girls’ team from Cathedral High and the boys’ squads from Charlestown High and New Mission High.

The young women of Boston Latin Academy and the young men of Charlestown High School are the new city champions of high school basketball following impressive victories over New Mission and Jeremiah Burke in their respective finals.

In January, Boston Public Schools Superintendent Brenda Cassellius announced interventions in three high schools where lower-than-average standardized test scores and graduation rates could trigger state takeovers of the schools.

The proposal to close Charlestown High School and open an “innovation school” in the same building was turned down unanimously last week by a three-member screening committee.

Staff and students at Charlestown High School say a mostly white group of parents in the neighborhood are attempting a hostile takeover of their building that would force layoffs of teachers and force out students with disabilities who are currently enrolled in specialized programs at the school.
