My first journey into song this winter was as a visitor to the class I attended on Beyoncé’s music on Jan. 29, at the Berklee College of Music.

The 67th Grammy Awards kicked off Black History Month in grand style.

When the Eaton Canyon fires roared through Altadena and Pasadena on January 7, the historic Black community of Altadena, a beacon of resilience and Civil Rights-era progress, faced near-total devastation. Among Los Angeles County’s hardest-hit areas, the unincorporated San Gabriel Valley town — home to 42,000 residents — saw over 1,000 structures destroyed, at least five lives lost and thousands displaced.

On March 29, 2024, Beyoncé released “Cowboy Carter,” a 27-track recording that she claims is not a country genre record, but a new Beyoncé record just “rooted in country.” America is our country. Black music is our music, and country music is our music, too.

The evening of Aug. 1 was clear as the full moon hovered over the fashionable crowd at a packed Gillette Stadium. Fans screamed, vogued and sang along with Beyoncé as she performed hits from her 25-year career during the Massachusetts leg of her Renaissance World Tour.
