A break in the rain Sunday provided an ideal opportunity for scores of celebrants to march in the Roxbury Unity Parade. The parade began at Madison Park Vocational Technical High School and proceeded along Malcolm X. Boulevard to Washington Street, terminating in a festival at Malcolm X. Park.

Poetry enthusiasts gathered Saturday at the Blair Lot in Nubian Square for the inaugural Roxbury Poetry Festival. While much of the festival was virtual, the day-long event culminated with a publisher’s poetry slam sponsored by Button Poetry and a “Beast The Beat” concert battle highlighting a local hip-hop artists. Boston Scenes: Kim Janey sworn in

Kim Janey, daughter of Roxbury who endured hurled rocks and racial slurs as an 11-year-old riding a school bus to Charlestown during desegregation, was sworn in as Boston’s first Black, first female mayor last Wednesday. Janey was sworn in by Kimberly Budd, the first Black chief justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts.

Boston Scenes: Ride for Black Lives

A crowd of more than 600 cyclists participated in the Ride for Black Lives, taking over city streets as they made their way from Franklin Park to the Boston Common.
