The 11th Big Head Community Festival

The National Center of Afro-American Artists and the Boston Juneteenth Committee are pleased to announce the 11th Big Head Community Festival on Saturday, September 14, 2024, from 12:00pm til dusk. The Festival will be held at 300 Walnut Avenue, Roxbury under the theme “Harmony In Motion – Canceling Violence Together”. This event coincides with the launching of Cancel Violence: Artists Speak, a public art project and exhibition supported by a subgrant from the Mellon Foundation’s Un-monument, Re-monument, De-monument Initiative and the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.

The day features a community ritual washing and polishing of John Wilson’s monumental sculpture Eternal Presence, followed by an afternoon of music, dance, poetry and an anti-violence workshop. Additionally, the day will be highlighted by a life-time award given to choreographer De Ama Battle who is a noted educator of African dance. Among other artists presented are the Fred Woodard Collective, singer Lovely Hoffman and dancer Kaleisha Chance. Come enjoy a late summer day of fun, food and fraternity.
