Sankofa Danzafro, Accommodating Lie

Boch Center Shubert Theatre
Afro-Colombian dance company Sankofa Danzafro returns to the Celebrity Series for an hour of timely and thought-provoking dance and live music. Accommodating Lie (La Mentira Complacente), the latest work by founder Rafael Palacios, features seven dancers and live musicians to “reaffirm the need for self-representation of Afro-descendant communities” in a forceful dismantling of stereotypes, clichés, and falsehoods about Black bodies and the meaning of being of African descent.
The company’s motto is “dance to be heard, more than just to be seen!” and the Sankofa dancers rewrite history from the perspective of subjugated and colonized Colombians—and offer insights into Colombia’s racial and class history that resonate here and across the world. The work fits powerfully with the company’s ethos; like the bird in the Sankofa symbol, they look to the past to help build and inform the future.
Masks plus vaccinations are required. See celebrityseries.org/safety for full information.
