Roxbury Sunflower Project – Radiant Community Launch with Free Sunflower Seed Giveaway
Roxbury Sunflower Project is a community wide collective action of planting and nurturing sunflowers. Now in its fifth year, Roxbury Sunflower Project is an annual tradition and our seeds are planted not only in many Boston neighborhoods but in other cities across the state and country. Sunflowers are potent and transformative symbols, honored in many cultures and countries over thousands of years. In the spring and summer seasons, multiple varieties of Sunflowers will grow into fields, gardens and totems in and around Roxbury and neighboring communities.
In the artist’s view, Sunflowers represent radiance, resilience, self-determination, in the ability of a community to evolve and emerge while staying grounded in its history and traditions. The sunflowers’ essential attributes mirror those that are reflected in the cultural traditions of Roxbury’s Black Community and must now be collectively amplified in our society. These are resilience, radiance, deep roots, transformation, heliotropism, scattering seeds, beauty and caring for the land. By planting one flower, one symbol collectively, we engage in community visioning and self determination.
