Celebrate Spring and Arborday with a Free Tree!

Join us on Saturday, May 1st from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 PM at Blair Lot in Nubian Square (12 Palmer Street) for our GreenRox Arbor Day Festival, the first Savor the Square event of 2021. This lively springtime gathering will celebrate the beauty and benefits of trees as well as the range of local environmental groups who are centering community resilience and equity in their work.

Speak for the Trees will be distributing free 5-gallon trees to residents of Lower Roxbury, including Redbud, Kousa Dogwood, Black Tupelo, and more! You can sign up to register for your free tree here.

Roxbury is confronted with a number of environmental and public health challenges as a result of low tree canopy cover. This event provides several community benefits:

  • Community-based actions to grow Roxbury’s tree canopy and help clean our air, cool our streets, and reduce the effects of climate change.

  • Improvement of Roxbury’s urban resilience and measures to promote environmental equity in one of Boston’s marginalized neighborhoods.

  • An opportunity for residents to safely engage in a day of festivities and fun under the sun (fingers crossed), to learn about what trees offer and to meet local organizations striving for a more just and equitable Boston.

Speak for the Trees and The American City Coalition will be teaming up with Alternatives for Community and Environment (ACE), Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET), Friends of Melnea Cass Boulevard, and Roxbury Main Street to bring this day of community connection and greening to Nubian Square. This event is sponsored by Natixis.
