A Free Celebration of Veterans at the Boston Athenæum

Free and open to all: Dr. Ginny Badgett highlights military history within the Boston Athenæum’s Special Collections. From Generals Washington and Knox through World War II, examine a selection of fine art, posters, prints, and other materials that depict and celebrate the service members of the United States Armed Forces.

Featured artwork: The News, 1945. Allan Rohan Crite (American, 1910–2007). Oil on canvas. Gift of the artist, 1971.

Crite’s painting of four men reacting to the coverage of President Roosevelt’s death makes international news a local story by setting it on the corner of Columbus Avenue and Northampton Street in the South End, with the Columbus Avenue A.M.E. Zion Church in the background.
