The Banner Institute for Community News was founded as a not-for-profit organization with the goal of encouraging the sustainability of Black and Brown multi-media community news outlets through funding, partnering, and educational support. The Institute’s mission is to support and amplify community news gathering and distribution, initially throughout the New England region and eventually across the country. Our programmatic and strategic efforts will be forged through innovation, education, storytelling, and intergenerational learning and collaboration.
BICN will generate funding from non-profit grants, private donations and live interactive multi-media events. Designed to reveal and promote all elements of Black history and culture, the events will utilize the latest experiential learning modalities. Featuring media literacy education, BICN will also support Community Organizations, working with them to create, generate, and distribute their own news and media information. Eventually, the Institute will offer programming and extend funding to a diverse range of media educational and literacy institutions.
“The Board is excited to support the Bay State Banner and help further its long standing commitment to providing news and information to our community. Charlie, Denise and I along with the rest of the BICN Board are eager to utilize our deep level of experience to realize the BICN Mission and further its goals. Stay tuned there will be more dramatic announcements soon to come.“ — Keith Motley, BICN Board President
