PIERRE, S.D. — A novelist and filmmaker who homesteaded in the early part of the last century near Gregory is being honored by the South Dakota town.
The U.S. Postal Service honored Oscar Micheaux with his own stamp in June.
The stamp was unveiled in South Dakota last week at the 15th annual Oscar Micheaux Film and Book Festival in Gregory. The four-day festival, which features African American films, black history and live music, ran from Aug. 4-7.
Micheaux, who had been a railroad porter before becoming a farmer in South Dakota and later an author and film producer, made films into the 1940s. He died in 1951.
