Karla Acevedo
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) recently named Karla Acevedo as one of its new members of its nationally recognized Public Policy Fellowship Program.
The nine-month youth leadership program offers a chance to gain hands-on experience on the national level: working in Congress, federal agencies, national nonprofit organizations and corporate America. Acevedo is now assigned to work with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus under Chair Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.).
“I can say with confidence that I have a brighter future ahead of me because of the networks, leadership development and exposure this fellowship is providing me with,” said Acevedo.
Part of the program includes weekly leadership training sessions with national leaders and policy experts in a number of different fields. This year the fellows are expected to complete a series of outreach activities to inform the Washington, D.C. communities of color about the importance of the 2010 Census.
Fellows receive a stipend of $2,200 a month to cover housing and living expenses.
“CHCI is committed to providing programs for Latino youth that develop and increase our nation’s pool of talented Latino professionals and future leaders,” said CHCI President and CEO Esther Aguilera. “Our goal is to ensure our future workforce is prepared and qualified to lead in a global, innovation economy.”
