Clearly, Trump doesn’t have our backs

Melvin B. Miller

African Americans have learned how to progress over the years despite the racial discrimination that persists in some elements of society. However, blacks have always expected that political leaders, while tolerating bigotry, would nonetheless protect the interests of the nation throughout the world. The disorganization and incompetence of the Trump administration has generated considerable anxiety among some blacks about our nation’s security.

Voters have always required those seeking the presidency to disclose their financial interests. The reason for this is to be sure that personal commitments do not conflict with the responsibility for the president to act exclusively for the public’s benefit, but this standard was not required of Donald Trump.

Trump did not disclose his tax returns. He did not place his assets in a blind trust. He generates federal revenue from his golf courses and office space. His hotel in Washington has become a necessary booking for foreign countries seeking benefits from the U.S., and Trump has negotiated business deals with Russia, a major adversary.

Is it any wonder, then, that many blacks feel insecure with a president who incites white racism and is also unpatriotic? This is indeed a difficult time for the republic.
