Caitlin Yoshiko Kandil, a reporter for the Banner, was recently named a 2011 National Health Journalism Fellow. Sponsored by the University of Southern California Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism and the California Endowment, the award  will underwrite Kandil’s upcoming series on the obstacles to healthy eating for low-income Bostonians.

In this series, she will investigate the high price of good food, the lack of access to nutritious options and the business of unhealthiness in poor neighborhoods. She will also focus on local activists striving to improve the food landscape in Boston.

As a fellow, Kandil also spent this week in Los Angeles with reporters from across the country learning new strategies for health journalism. Kandil hopes her series will shed light on the vast health disparities in Boston, as well as possible ways of ameliorating them.
