The appointment of Dr. Maria del Guadalupe Davidson as the next Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at University of Massachusetts Amherst, effective July 1, 2024, marks an exciting new chapter for the college spearheaded by a distinguished professional committed to changing the landscape of higher education. Her distinguished career, marked by a steadfast dedication to gender and racial justice, inclusivity, and student success marks a welcome milestone for the university.

Over the past five years at West Virginia University, she has held several key positions, including Provost Fellow for Faculty Recruitment and Hiring, Associate Dean for Social Justice, Faculty Development, and Innovation, and Director and Academic Coordinator for Social Justice Affairs. Her leadership in social justice affairs has been marked by initiatives that not only promote equity but also drive innovation in academic and community settings.

“Lupe’s achievements as a scholar and as a leader speak to her ability to navigate the changing landscape of higher education. Her reputation for interdisciplinary collaboration, building inclusive communities, and commitment to student success make her the clear choice to take on this role,” says Mike Malone, interim provost and senior vice chancellor of academic affairs.

Her academic background is also impressive. Dr. Davidson earned her bachelor’s degree in English and Political Science from St. Bonaventure University and holds master’s degrees in English and Communication Studies, as well as doctorate in Rhetoric, all from Duquesne University.

She is renowned for co-editing “Critical Perspectives on bell hooks” and “Convergences: Black Feminism and Continental Philosophy.” These publications have contributed to critical discussions on race, gender, and indemnity, influencing both scholarly discourse and practical applications in social justice.

Her recent work with scholars and grassroots women’s organizations in northern Uganda highlights Dr. Davidson’s commitment to global gender justice.

As she takes over from Barbara Krauthamer, with Joye Bowman having served as interim dean, Dr. Davidson’s appointment heralds a future where interdisciplinary collaboration and academic excellence are at the forefront of the college’s mission.
