Shopping at Seaport to the sound of music
Black Owned Bos. gets in the groove for Black Music Month
June is Black Music Month and an upcoming Black Owned Bos. market pop-up in the Seaport neighborhood will celebrate musical talent of the African diaspora while highlighting local businesses. This event is one of six Black Owned Bos. market events happening in the Seaport throughout the summer.
During the market pop-ups more than 30 Black-owned businesses set up shop to promote their unique products, art pieces and services. The vendors run the gamut from clothing designed by African artists at Adorn Me Africa to organic coffee blends from Happy Beans Roaster and plant-based products from Krio Skincare.
“This season of the Seaport x Black Owned Bos. will be our best yet!” says Jae’da Turner, founder and managing director of Black Owned Bos. “Our goal for this season is to create a destination experience where people look forward to something new each month and can spend the day with us eating, shopping and discovering their new favorite retail brands.”
At the Black Music Month market on June 25, visitors will enjoy the sweet sounds of live music from The Mastadonis Project led by Adonis Martin, a group that fuses jazz, R&B and Caribbean beats in their unique sound. Martin is also the musical director for the newly opened jazz club Grace by Nia; listeners may recognize his band members from the stage there.
To keep shoppers fueled, Progressive Wine Co., run by the same duo behind The Urban Grape, will serve Sonoma wines by the glass and Hyde Park’s beloved ZaZ restaurant will dish out Caribbean fusion bites. The sale of branded merchandise and the proceeds from a series of raffles held throughout the event will benefit the local music nonprofit BAMS Fest.
This won’t be the only opportunity to celebrate local artists while shopping Black-owned brands. On August 20 the market will pop up in Seaport again as part of ZaZ Fest, a vibrant Afro-Caribbean festival hosted by ZaZ restaurant celebrating everything from Caribbean food and drink to music, arts and culture. The two-day festival features standout headliners like Mr. Killa and Ky-Mani Marley, Bob Marley’s son.
“We are excited to continue growing our partnership with Black Owned Bos. and are humbled that this year marks our largest market yet!” says Emily Soukas, associate director, community & cartnerships, WS Development Seaport. “We are proud to welcome such a talented array of Black entrepreneurs and artisans to the neighborhood.”
