The problem confronting Blacks is much greater than deciding who has the best political capability to be elected mayor of Boston. Republicans in many states across the country have decided that Blacks should be prevented from participating in elections. They have recently passed a law in Georgia that makes it more difficult for Blacks to vote, and it is a felony for anyone to provide food or water to someone who is standing in line to vote.
When the republic was originally established, women, slaves and men without property were denied the right to vote, but constitutional amendments have extended the franchise to all citizens regardless of race or gender. However, concern about being overpowered at the polls has induced whites to impede Blacks’ constitutional rights. The government passed the Voting Rights Act in 1965, but that clearly has not resolved the issue.
One of the major objectives of voting is to induce government to pass laws to provide for the interests of the working class. There is a history in America of poor whites opposing programs that will benefit them as long as they are advertised as being beneficial to Blacks. A good example is their original opposition to the Affordable Care Act that was hostilely called “Obamacare.”
Blacks, whites, Asians and Latinos in the same economic class should be united in efforts to gain support for government programs. The refusal of racists to work with others in order to achieve their own objectives demonstrates a serious level of hostility.
There is still no resting time for Blacks!!!
