The Greater Boston Section of the National Council of Negro Women (GBS NCNW) has elected Lisa Braxton its president for the 2020-2022 term. Founded in 1992, GBS NCNW is one of over 200 community-based nonprofit sections chartered in 32 states. An organization of organizations, NCNW enlightens, inspires and connects more than 2,000,000 women and men. Its mission is to lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families and communities. NCNW was founded in 1935 by the influential educator and activist Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, and for more than 50 years, the iconic Dr. Dorothy Height was president of NCNW.
Braxton is an award-winning former television journalist and award-winning novelist. Under her leadership, GBS NCNW will focus on supplying backpacks and school supplies to children who are homeless, supporting the mission of Black Lives Matter Boston, mentoring high school students in science and technology competitions, hosting a career awareness day for teens, and launching health initiatives.
