Khymani James has been appointed student representative to the Boston School Committee. James is a senior at Boston Latin Academy and is a lifelong Boston resident. He is currently a member of the Boston Student Advisory Council (BSAC) where he has served on the School Climate and Improvement Subcommittee since January of 2020. In his leadership role on the subcommittee, he has been a strong advocate for effective teaching and educational equity through calling for more resources to be given towards student learning and pedagogy in the classroom.
As a BSAC member, James has given multiple testimonies to the Boston School Committee and City Council on issues such as immigration, over policing and education while also participating on working groups to formulate better policy around these issues. His passion for educational reform stems from his experiences as a BPS student and his mother’s saying, “Education is the key to success” — something he believes can only become reality if educational leaders work to give students, teachers and school communities the resources they need and deserve.
James is a dancer and choreographer for one of the most popular dance teams at his school named Undefined Dance and has served as the captain of the dance team. He has also been a member of the Boston Debate League and a tutor/mentor to AP Biology students working with Harvard Medical School.
