General Council and CCO for Boston-based non-profit Social Finance and former Massachusetts revenue commissioner Navjeet Bal has recently been named to officially replace Dan Rivera as the chief executive for MassDevelopment. Bal, whose experience in the corporate sector of Massachusetts precedes her, has been appointed to this position on the heels of a tumultuous period for MassDevelopment as consistent personnel turnover and unstable leadership have led to the finance agency needing strong guidance as they usher in the new year. A graduate of Williams College and Northeastern Law School, Bal has served as general counsel, among other roles, to a myriad of Boston-based companies and law firms. Her time as one of the few women to be appointed revenue commissioner for the commonwealth of Massachusetts as well as her work in the private sector, has primed her to be an ideal candidate for the position. Governor Maura Healey specifically requested Bal in light of her experience and fresh perspective.
“Navjeet’s strong experience in both the public and private sectors will enable MassDevelopment to meet the evolving needs of our state, and we look forward to working with her to drive innovative strategies to grow our economy,” Healey said in a statement.
Bal has spent the majority of her professional career in Boston and has accredited her work to giving her the ability to have a deep understanding of the financial complexities and challenges facing the Massachusetts government. Earlier in her career, Bal worked with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a public finance lawyer and with Social Finance she has had experience working with entities from across the country and around the world. Her 35 years of experience along with her expertise in developing new and creative funding models has led Governor Healey to feel that Bal is perfectly suited for the role. Bal is set to begin her post on December 9.
