The Brockton Public Schools have named a professional with a background in public safety and schoolwide emergency management as the district’s first director of safety and security.

Robert Jackson will join the Brockton Public Schools later this month in the newly established role, where he will oversee the district’s efforts to foster a safe learning and teaching environment at all of Brockton’s public schools.

Jackson will be responsible for the management, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the district’s safety and security program. He will also oversee mitigation, prevention and response to emergency incidents and manage the district’s security personnel and systems. Jackson will also serve as a resource for school leaders in both preparing for and responding to school-based emergencies and incidents.

“Robert’s training and experience in both law enforcement and operational security will be an immediate asset to the Brockton Public Schools,” Interim Superintendent Priya Tahiliani said. “I’m looking forward to partnering with him and drawing on his expertise as we build our district’s strongest-ever safety and security program and continue our work of prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of students, staff and visitors to our schools.”

Jackson joins the Brockton Public Schools after most recently serving as the assistant director of emergency preparedness for the Boston Public Schools. In that role, he developed, implemented and maintained school safety and security operations, provided technical assistance and training to staff and collaborated across departments to facilitate improved safety across the city’s schools. He also led the department’s risk assessments and audited safety precautions in the district’s school buildings.

Prior to working in Boston’s schools, Jackson served as a campus police sergeant for the Department of Mental Health facility in Brockton, where he oversaw a team of officers, and led incident investigations and de-escalation efforts while partnering with care providers to understand and meet the needs of DMH clients.

Jackson has also served as a call firefighter in Berkley, Massachusetts.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in science with a concentration in criminal justice, and also graduated from the state’s Intermittent Reserve Police Academy. He is a native of Dorchester, Massachusetts.
