Friends of the Public Garden has announced Maliaka Shepard as its new senior communications and outreach officer.

She will carry out all communications and community outreach to support the organization’s mission to renew, care, and advocate for the three parks that play a signature role in shaping how people experience the city of Boston, the Boston Common, Public Garden and Commonwealth Avenue Mall. She will work closely with the Development and Parks Care teams, uplifting the many stories of the three parks and making them more accessible and welcoming places for everyone to visit and enjoy.

As a talented communications professional and experienced strategic planner, Shepard will play a critical role in supporting the Friends’ communications across all channels and community outreach within the city of Boston and beyond.

Shepard most recently served as the director of strategic planning and special projects at the Museum of African American History in Boston. In this role, in the marketing and external relations department, she oversaw the strategic communications planning, member relations, digital communications, integrated media relations, public programs and marketing, among other responsibilities.
