The NAACP is proud to announce attorney Tanisha M. Sullivan as president of its New England Area Conference (NEAC). Sullivan has served as volunteer president of the NAACP Boston Branch since 2017, and most recently served as host to the 114th National Convention, held in the Hub. The convention boasted more than 13,000 attendees and was hailed as the most inclusive and innovative in NAACP history.

As the oldest civil rights organization in the country, the NAACP’s mission is to achieve equity, political rights and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education and economic security of Black people and all persons of color.

“I’ve had the privilege of witnessing Tanisha’s exceptional leadership firsthand during her tenure of over eight years as the head of the Boston Branch NAACP,” Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the national NAACP, said. “Her style of leadership combines collaboration with assertiveness, effectively tackling local issues that carry national significance. As she steps into this broader role, we’re excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Tanisha and other leaders from New England on vital advocacy and legislative matters.”

The New England Area Conference of the NAACP covers Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. It is the voice of the NAACP on the state level and is responsible for developing legislative, programmatic and litigation strategy that advances the NAACP mission in its catchment area.
