From Boston to Barbados: How one man from Hyde Park is using his car to fund his dreams

Alvin, juggling a full-time job, was on a mission to find ways to make some side money and chase his dreams.

Alvin’s been a Boston local nearly his whole life, growing up in Hyde Park — but his dreams reach far beyond the city’s limits.

Like many other Bostonians, Alvin’s got great pride in his Caribbean roots. His ultimate goal is to start a kayaking business in Barbados, where most of his family still resides.

Alvin uses Roadie, a crowdsourced delivery app, to save up for his business. He makes money with his personal vehicle in his free time, watching the balance in his account grow closer and closer to his goal.

Early mornings on the road

Alvin’s day starts before the sun rises, often as early as 5:30 a.m., when he first opens the app to find his first deliveries. He uses his pickup truck to deliver big and bulky items, earning up to $36 per delivery.

Alvin appreciates the flexibility that driving with Roadie provides. He can adjust his schedule as needed, even switching to night shifts at his full-time airport job so that he can deliver with Roadie during the day.

“You work as much as you want or as little as you want,” he said.

This flexibility allows him to juggle his responsibilities while still making time to drive with Roadie.

The benefits of being your own boss

What distinguishes the Roadie app from the other delivery apps he uses, according to Alvin, is its complete transparency and flexibility.

“You know what you’re getting into before you even decide if you want to pick a delivery,” he said.

The ability to bundle multiple deliveries together for even more] earnings is another advantage. The Roadie app displays an optimal route so that drivers make the most of their time on the road and maximize earnings.

“You can pile multiple gigs together. And it helps that the Roadie app suggests easy routes for you to use if you want so that you can get everybody’s orders to them in a timely manner,” he said.

A stepping stone to bigger dreams

For Alvin, Roadie isn’t just a source of extra cash — it’s a stepping stone towards his dreams. His earnings are helping him save up to purchase equipment for a clear kayaking business in Barbados.

“The money I earn using Roadie has definitely been a huge help, a huge assistance,” he said. “It’s given me a boost for what I need to reach my goals.”

Alvin sees Roadie as a great option for anyone looking to start their own business. He believes that it offers entrepreneurs a great option to earn cash to help fund their dreams.

Why choose Roadie?

Alvin appreciates the lack of minimum vehicle requirements, the ability to offer on multiple deliveries at once, and the ability to earn extra cash without having passengers in his car.

“In my opinion, in this area, Roadie’s probably the best [app for delivery drivers],” he said. “You can definitely earn a lot of money.”
