Ekua Holmes was honored with a Massachusetts Book Award by the Massachusetts Center for the Book during a ceremony at the State House last week. The award was for her illustration of the Children’s book, Dream Street, written by Tricia Elam Walker.
The Massachusetts Book Awards recognize significant works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, translated literature and children’s/young adult literature written, illustrated, or translated by current Commonwealth residents.
Holmes, who lives in Roxbury, is a mixed media artist, illustrator and arts organization professional. She is founder of the Black Art Collection, an organization dedicated to providing emerging artists a platform and introducing their art to audiences. She currently serves as vice chair of the Boston Arts Commission. She serves as assistant director at the Center for Art and Community Partnerships at Mass Art and manages sparc! the ArtMobile for the college.
