It’s time for Biden’s appeal to ‘build back better’

Melvin B. Miller

Americans anticipate that the new administration in the West Wing under the leadership of President Joe Biden will finally bring competence and professionalism to the government. But just as important, Biden expects to be able to establish a reasonable level of comity between political parties.

This is a tall order, and liberals are concerned that the racism so common in the nation will impede the attainment of President Biden’s goals. The problem is that the underlying reasons for the hostility are unclear. Conflicts between ethnic groups are quite common, but they usually have an identifiable cause.

Nations and tribes have disputes over borders and sovereign rights, trade agreements and religious differences. Old violent conflicts are long remembered. While Blacks reprove the tradition of slavery in America, there has been no rebellion to punish the progeny of former slave owners.

The greatest disapproval seems to be that some whites are irritated that Blacks are no longer subservient. It is time for Americans to get rid of provincialism and understand that the nation is urbanized, with multiple cultures living side by side in metropolitan areas. The best advice is to get used to it. Find a place that seems to be comfortable and become a good neighbor.
