SD: Why Irving Berlin?
HF: It was not my intention to ever portray him. I thought he was a jingle writer, who had also wrote a couple of popular songs. My friend, Eva, insisted I investigate him and his music. He was a major contributor to music. He was a musical genius just like Mozart. It’s funny, the one I didn’t want to do has become my most popular show.
SD: What has been the most fascinating thing about Berlin that you learned?
HF: After all I learned, I still marvel at his genius. He chose not to go to school because people said it would ruin his musical talent.
SD: You have played many great composers, do you have a favorite?
HF: Of course, it’s the one I’m portraying at the time or I will get in big trouble [he laughs]. I love what I get to do.
SD: What is it about music and playing the piano that you love so much?
HF: For me, it is who I am. It runs through every fiber of my being. It does something to me that I can’t comprehend. Music is a powerful tool that can change the human condition
SD: What do you want the audience to learn from your performance?
HF: I find joy in bringing to life the men who have made great contributions to the world of music. I hope the audience will also partake in that joy. I want them to enjoy the beautiful music and get a real sense of what goes into making this amazing music.
