An Experimental Event Landscape called “The Lawn on D”
Bringing Together The Arts, Music, Culture and Food to the Innovation District
An interactive and first-of-its-kind outdoor event space called “The Lawn on D” – located adjacent to the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC) – opens officially to the public on Saturday, August 16th at 12 p.m. The day’s activities will include live performances, full bar service, lawn games, live DJs, food trucks, public art exhibits on display, inflatable photo ops, and more.
The Lawn on D is located at 420 D Street between Summer Street and Claflin Street, (south of the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel), in South Boston’s Innovation District. It’s a 2.7-acre public space designed to encourage public engagement, foster creativity and test opportunities for integrating the BCEC into the urban fabric with arts, music, games, food and beverage and other community-driven programming.
An entirely new concept for Boston, the site will draw audiences from across the city and bring vitality to the neighborhood through inspired, high-caliber programming and events. Recognizing its potential as an innovative private and public space, The Lawn on D is designed to further activate and engage the South Boston community.
Owned and operated by the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA), The Lawn on D will be open for approximately 18 months beginning August 16 thru October 31, 2014 offering seasonal programming. The hours of operation are Sundays through Thursdays, 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. During this period, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA) will experiment with different types of programming to help plan for a permanent outdoor space that will be a part of the BCEC expansion.
Thursdays through Sundays, The Lawn on D offers regular and special programming not available anywhere else in Boston, including live music, performances, festivals, outdoor art installations and lawn games, all accompanied by a tented bar and a regular food truck series.
The Lawn on D will offer recurring and special programming divided into four categories:
• D Street ArtLAB (large-scale art installations and art events)
• D Street Games (lawn games and local gaming leagues)
• D Street Live (performing arts events)
• D Street Music (concerts and festivals)
Most public programming from Thursdays through Sundays is free and open to the public. On occasion, The Lawn on D will host special private ticketed events. The Lawn on D website, www.lawnond.com, launches on August 14th.
The Lawn on D is located a short walking distance from the World Trade Center Station on the Silver Line and the South Station or Broadway stops on the Red Line. There is also a Hubway bike station in front of the BCEC on Summer Street. Depending on BCEC event calendars, BCEC parking may be available during major events at The Lawn on D.
