Associate Director of Education Training

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a full-time position. The Associate Director of Education Training will work closely with the Director of Education, Vice President of Education, and Education Department to provide exemplary training and to help coordinate the department’s overall technical assistance effort for the national network of YouthBuild educators.

The Associate Director will facilitate trainings for YouthBuild educators and programs regarding education practices, curriculum development, blended instructional approaches and most importantly – instructional shifts for responding to Common Core State Standards and new High School Equivalency exams.

The Associate Director will lead work providing trainings for individual programs and more frequently, for groups of program staff at conferences and training events. The position will develop plans for facilitating events, create through-lines for content continuation across different conferences over time, develop structures for following up with individual and groups of educators, and connect education trainings to other technical assistance efforts through YouthBuild USA’s other departments and funded initiatives.

The successful candidate will have excellent facilitation skills, engaging training approaches, considerable content knowledge, and strong people skills to connect education knowledge with people and adult learners.

The position will interact with national experts in the fields of alternative education, instructional excellence, postsecondary access/success, youth development, career development, and youth voice.

Major duties and responsibilities:

Support the learning of YouthBuild programs, educators, practitioners and coaches.

  • Lead facilitation of workshops and trainings for YouthBuild staff across the country at conferences, primarily for the education department and the US Department of Labor.
  • Provide training for work focused on the intersection of education with career development, service, leadership, mentoring, criminal justice, construction, and counseling.
  • Support the connection of training efforts to broader education departmental goals, product development, communications efforts, research, and overall integration plans.
  • Work with the Associate Director of Education to inform the development and dissemination of resources for the field of YouthBuild programs, including but not limited to new tools, products, and an engaging and robust professional learning community.
  • Collaborate with the Director and Associate Director of Education to inform and coordinate program improvement efforts with a team of consultants/coaches to strengthen on-site technical assistance with local programs.
  • Travel extensively within the YouthBuild network to connect with programs and lead training events across the country.

Other Roles and Responsibilities

  • Track success of, challenges facing, and lessons learned during conferences and events. This should include qualitative and quantitative measures of conference training impact.
  • Contribute to grant reports needed by funders. And contribute to fundraising proposals with department leadership as appropriate for emerging opportunities with foundations.
  • Work with education department staff to develop and maintain partnerships with other internal departments in the organization and with relevant external education organizations and groups to strengthen and deepen YouthBuild USA’s technical assistance work in education.
  • Represent YouthBuild USA as appropriate at meetings and network gatherings.
  • Work with other education department staff to co-lead conference planning efforts.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Director of Education.

Minimum qualifications (knowledge, skills, and abilities):

  • Experienced facilitator, trainer, coach and leader with established skills for leading secondary and adult learners.
  • Strong understanding of how secondary and postsecondary education systems work best for low-income young people, especially students who previously left traditional K-12 school systems.
  • Deep familiarity with teaching and learning practices and teacher training, including classroom teaching experience (preferably recent).
  • Understanding of learning styles, various learning assessments, differentiated instruction, learning differences, and project based learning.
  • Comfort level with curriculum design, redesign, and secondary-postsecondary alignment efforts.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable of best and most promising blended learning approaches and resources.
  • Skilled communicator with the ability to clearly, succinctly and powerfully express complicated concepts (especially through oral delivery) to a variety of audiences – especially instructors.
  • Ability and willingness to travel. Represents approximately 40%-50% of position responsibility. The amount of travel will vary across months and projects, but will represent a considerable portion of the successful applicant’s time.
  • Deep respect for diversity and its opportunities and challenges and a demonstrated passion for working with low-income young adults.
  • Masters Degree in Education or related field and experience in alternative education pathways.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience working with some combination of schools, community-based organizations, alternative education models and postsecondary institutions to improve learning outcomes for low-income youth.
