Development Associate

The Development Associate will assist the Director of Individual Giving with all forms of donor acquisition and donor cultivation (major donors and annual fund donors), donor research, event planning, and the creation of fundraising materials with the goal of increasing private funds to support the mission and vision of YouthBuild USA. The Development Associate will be a member of YouthBuild USA’s Development and Communications Team.

Development and Fundraising

  • Assist in increasing funds raised from individual donors through targeted solicitations, including the seasonal direct mail appeals, fundraising events, and new fundraising campaigns or ideas.
  • Participate in the formulation of fundraising strategy for the organization and specific projects through meetings and discussions with program and development staff. Makes recommendations about appropriate contacts or visits for development staff.
  • Analyze donor metrics and outcomes of different individual funding streams so that the information can help the organization adapt its fundraising strategy. Presents results of research in the form of written reports which include, as appropriate, both detailed information organized to facilitate retrieval and analyses of the significance of the information.
  • Maintain and grow donor relationships in a hands-on, independent manner through calls and direct electronic communications.
  • Contribute to the creation and editing of direct mail fundraising packages for the annual appeals and other targeted mailings.
  • Collaborate with members of the development and communications team towards the achievement of goals.

Researching donors

  • Identify and research existing and prospective individual donors.
  • Conduct and prepare corporate, institutional, and individual philanthropic research.
  • Prepare reports on donors’ giving history and identify groups with additional potential.


Serve as the database lead for the development team

  • Manage all aspects of our fundraising database including accurate reporting, donor information, gift processing, donor recognition, and the generation of mailing lists.
  • Facilitate and track electronic mass communications to current and prospective donors.
  • Create and distribute event invitations and record attendance data.
  • Generate reports and criteria-based contact lists as needed.
  • Take initiative in proposing and implementing new ideas.

Communication

  • Provide direct support of communications activities, such as photo, video, and story resource management.
  • Assist with the preparation of high-quality donor correspondence, proposals, grants, reports, mailings, acknowledgements, etc.
  • Together with the Director of Individual Giving, and other team members and event hosts, organize events for individual donors and prospects, including site visits, breakfasts at corporate offices, and House Parties.
  • Staff fundraising events to maximize contact with current and prospective donors and work with Director of Individual Giving on all event follow-ups.

Administrative & Other

  • Support the Friends of YouthBuild Organizing Committee including assisting with the scheduling of meetings, preparing agendas, preparing minutes, and finding innovative ways to expand and increase the participation of this group.
  • Supervise the Development AmeriCorps VISTA in the support of the Young Professionals for YouthBuild Fundraising Committee.
  • Process fiscal department forms related to pass-through gifts, honoraria for graduate speakers, and travel expenses.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with outstanding academic qualifications and/or one to three years of professional experience including work in a nonprofit development department
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to social justice

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with fundraising software or other relational database management software, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint in addition to desktop publishing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with a wide variety of people from many different backgrounds.
  • Experience working with youth
  • Well organized, detail oriented, and capable of multi-tasking

  • Flexible and committed to excellence
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment

Compensation

YouthBuild USA offers competitive salary and benefits, including health coverage, a 401(k) savings plan, life insurance, and disability benefits. The salary range is will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
