When it comes to fighting cancer, lifestyles matter. Just ask the Washington, D.C.-based American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR). The Institute contends that eating a plant-based diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, can help ward off many cancers. Add exercise and weight control to the mix and one third of all cancers each year in this country could be avoided, according to the AICR.

Healthy living is not a guarantee against cancer and other serious diseases, but it may reduce their risk.

Quit smoking

tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of disease, disability and death in the United States.

Maintain a healthy weight

overweight and obesity are linked to increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.


Exercise

physical activity can reduce the risk of chronic disease, improve balance and help lose weight.

Follow a healthy eating plan

include a variety of foods from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean protein and healthy fats.


Avoid excessive alcohol use

alcoholism is the third leading lifestyle-related cause of death and a risk factor for many cancers.
