Roxbury hosts community health meeting

The Boston Public Health Commission and the Roxbury Community Alliance for Health (RCAH), invites Roxbury residents, health care providers, community-based organizations, and other interested people to a community health meeting.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 21, from 5p.m. – 8p.m. at the Whittier Street Health Center, 1125 Tremont Street, in Roxbury (next to the Reggie Lewis Center).

The third in a series of city-wide health forums this year, the meeting is a platform for people living and working in Roxbury to discuss health issues specific to the neighborhood.  The Commission and RCAH are interested in working together with residents, community agencies, faith-based organizations, businesses, elected officials, and others to develop a vision for a stronger, healthier Roxbury and to work towards bringing the vision to life.

“This event presents a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together not only to learn more about the issues affecting their community, but also to think about what a healthier Roxbury would look like and to be a part of making it a reality,” said Dr. Barbara Ferrer, executive director of the Boston Public Health Commission. “Everyone has a role to play in making our neighborhoods and our city healthier.”

NABJ convention slated for Boston in 2014

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) recently announced the selection of Boston as the host city for its 2014 Convention and Career Fair, July 30 – Aug. 3, 2014. This marks the first time NABJ will visit New England.

“NABJ is excited about going to Boston,” said NABJ President Gregory Lee Jr. “It is a fabulous city with the right mixture of location, hotel price, convention space and leisure activities to make a great convention for our members.”

In recent years, Boston has played host to other minority and journalism conventions, such as The National Urban League, Blacks in Government, the Online News Association and the Asian American Journalists Association.

 “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome the NABJ ,” said James E. Rooney, executive director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority. “What better location to host NABJ than Boston, a city rich in journalism history and home to America’s very first newspaper, “The Boston News-Letter.”

Pine Street opens Veterans’ Services Office

Pine Street Inn has relocated its Veterans’ Services Office in Roxbury. Formerly at 2304 Washington Street, the office has moved to 390 Warren Street. Veterans may walk-in Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Pine Street Inn has worked with Rep. Gloria Fox and other state and elected officials to develop services to ensure that the Roxbury community is afforded an integrated, comprehensive system of social services for veterans. The relocation of the office to this new location will improve upon those efforts.

“I believe the new home of the Veterans’ Services Office will enhance our Greater Roxbury community and help to provide the convenient and disability-accessible space for veterans of all ages and especially veterans of color,” said Rep. Fox.

At the center, veterans can find assistance in addressing urgent needs such as emergency housing, food, mental health or medical treatment or a personal crisis. They can also receive assistance with pursuing educational advancement, vocational training or employment.
