Kevin C. Peterson
Kevin C. Peterson was recently honored with the Mollie L. Moon Award at the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts annual gala.
Founder of the New Democracy Coalition, Peterson was recognized for his leadership during the state’s redistricting process. Peterson led a coalition effort that resulted in historic legislation signed into law by Gov. Deval Patrick.
The new law increased the potential number of State House and Assembly seats by 100 percent, and created a congressional seat comprised of a majority of black, Latino and Asian voters.
Peterson is a democracy activist whose organization is based at the College of Public and Community Service at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
A former fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Peterson has served as a researcher for the Trotter Institute and participated in the U.S. Department of State Speakers Program.
Peterson has lectured across the United States and in Africa, including universities in Barnako, Mali, and Dakar, Senegal.
“I am honored to be a recipient of this award,” Peterson said. “We forged a statewide coalition of people of color, progressive and faith-based organizations to re-imagine what it means to share political power.”
