Harvard men’s basketball coach Tommy Amaker has led the team to its first appearance in the NCAA’s March madness for the first time since 1946.
“We are thrilled and honored to have an opportunity to compete in the 2012 NCAA tournament,” Harvard coach Tommy Amaker said in a statement. “This is a tremendous moment for Harvard University, our basketball program and our community. Go Crimson!”
This season, Harvard set a school record with 26 victories, and clinched the conference’s automatic bid with Princeton’s 62-52 win over Penn last week. This will be Harvard’s second trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history.
Harvard was 26-4 overall, finished 12-2 in the Ivy League, and earned its second straight conference crown and its first outright title. Harvard earned the first national ranking in program history, reaching as high as No. 21 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll and No. 22 in the AP poll.
Amaker is no stranger to the NCAA tournament. He’s coaching career followed a highly successful playing career at Duke. He was a four-year starting point guard, and led Duke to the 1986 NCAA championship game as part of a 37-3 season.
