Community Voices: Feel-good stories need to be told

Max Cyril

My friend and co-worker has been out of work since early November. She is a single mother of a 7-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl. She has been sending letters to talk show hosts, Wendy Williams, Oprah and Ellen with no response. She wasn’t asking for much, she just wanted to make sure her daughters had a nice Christmas.

She sent a letter to local comedian Jonathan Gates and he invited her to his weekly comedy night at Slade’s Bar and Grill. What he did at Slade’s was nothing short of a miracle. After saying his weekly prayer for the community, he asked my friend to come up to the stage and he read her letter. He then asked the men in the audience to step up to the plate and help this single mother have a good Christmas. In the end, the audience gave her more than $700 in cash. Who needs a national celebrity when we have one right here in our city! God Bless Jonathan Gates and his Black Comedy Explosion Family.
