Syvalia Hyman III
The 48-member volunteer Board of Directors of Action for Boston Community Development, Inc. (ABCD), Boston’s antipoverty agency, recently elected Syvalia “Val” Hyman III as its new board chairman.
Hyman is now president and CEO of the United South End/Lower Roxbury Development Corporation (UDC) and its subsidiaries, the UDC Real Property Corporation and the UDC Housing Development Corporation in Boston.
ABCD President/CEO John J. Drew said that Hyman has been an “unwavering pillar of strength in low-income communities.”
Prior to his current position, Hyman was associate director of United South End Settlements, a neighborhood human services organization. Earlier he served as senior management planner with the United Community Services and the United Community Planning Corporation, the planning organizations for the United Way of Massachusetts Bay. Before that he served as director of the ABCD Roxbury/North Dorchester Area Planning Action Council (now Elm Hill Family Service Center).
“It is a great privilege to lead the board of this remarkable organization at a time when our low-income community — and all of us — face great economic and human challenges,” Hyman said.
