After being nominated by House leadership, state Rep. Jeffrey Sánchez, D-Jamaica Plain, will participate next week in the 2008 Emerging Political Leaders Program, sponsored by the State Legislative Leaders Foundation.

The program is scheduled to run from July 14 to 17 at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. Dr. Edward Freeman and faculty from the Darden School and the State Legislative Leaders Foundation will lead classes covering an array of leadership topics. Program sessions help participants identify their strengths and weaknesses, understand the obligations and challenges of leadership, and develop skills and appreciation for effective and ethical leadership.

Sánchez was one of 50 legislators from across the United States selected to participate in this prestigious program. His “dedication to public service and his proven leadership qualities are what made his colleagues nominate him, and why he was chosen to participate,” according to a statement announcing the honor.

“These legislators are the cream of the crop and will, in the near future, be taking on significant leadership responsibilities in their states,” said Stephen G. Lakis, president of the State Legislative Leaders Foundation. “This program helps them prepare to take on the mantle of leadership and bear the responsibilities with the utmost effectiveness.”

Sánchez also recently received the Boston Metropolitan Area Planning Council’s Legislator of the Year Award for his ongoing commitment to the positive development of the metro Boston regional area. Sánchez was honored specifically for his work on surplus land, census data, affordable housing and water infrastructure improvements.
