South End resident Fred Lowery this month began his tenure as the newest member of the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School’s board of trustees. Lowery is senior vice president of Thermo Fisher Scientific. A BRCPS mentor who has played a key role in Thermo Fisher Scientific’s STEM education partnership with the Hyde Park school, Lowery was recently named to Savoy Magazine’s 2018 list of “Most Influential Blacks in Corporate America.”

Thermo Fisher Scientific is a $20 billion company with 68,000 employees worldwide. As president of the Waltham company’s Life Sciences and Laboratory Products Groups, Lowery leads a group of businesses that provide an extensive portfolio of reagents, instruments, equipment, consumables and chemicals used in biological and medical research, discovery and production of new drugs and vaccines and diagnosis of disease. He has successfully led businesses for over 20 years, while working for several Fortune 500 companies, including holding leadership positions at Maytag Corporation, General Motors, and Delphi Automotive Systems.

A father of four and native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Lowery earned a bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tennessee Technological University, and holds a master’s of Science degree in Manufacturing Management from Kettering University. In addition to his recent appointment to a three-year term on BRCPS’ nine-member Board of Trustees, Lowery is a member of the Tennessee Tech University Engineering Board of Advisors.
