Political newcomer Chynah Tyler swept the field in the race to succeed state Rep. Gloria Fox, winning with 43 percent of the2,061 votes cast in the Seventh Suffolk House district.
With 901 votes, Tyler beat youth worker Monica Cannon (794 votes) and legislative aide Marydith Tuitt (364 votes) in the Democratic primary. She will run unopposed in the November 8 general election.
Volunteers and campaign workers were in full swing during Tuesday’s balloting, crowding around the entrances to the busiest polling locations in Roxbury, but voters were largely absent in this low-turnout primary.
In other contested races around the city, 11th Suffolk District incumbent Liz Malia handily defeated challenger Charles Clemmons Muhammad. In the 12th Suffolk District, Dan Cullinane fended off a challenge from attorney Javon Lacet and 5th Suffolk District Representative Evandro Carvalho handily defeated challenger Melinda Stewart.
In other races, former City Councilor Stephen Murphy won a seven-way race for the Suffolk county Register of Deeds seat and, in one of the more closely-watched races, State Sen. Pat Jehlen of Somerville fended off a challenge by Cambridge City Councilor Leland Cheung.
In Springfield, City Councilor Bud Williams won a four-way race for the 11th Hampden District seat currently held by outgoing Rep. Ben Swann, beating Ben Swann Jr., Ken Barnett and Larry Lawson.
