State Rep. Carlos Henriquez was handed a two-and-a-half year sentence with six months of jail time in an assault case.

Two years ago, then-state Rep. Carlos Henriquez saw his promising political career cut short after he accused of assaulting a woman in his rental car.

In a move many said was contrary to House rules, his colleagues in the Legislature voted to remove him from office. He was sentenced to six months jail time, but has steadfastly maintained his innocence. While Henriquez sat behind bars, the House arranged for a speedy special election, which current Rep. Evandro Carvalho won, beating out Barry Lawton, Jennifer Johnson and Karen Charles.

Today Henriquez is jumping back into the political arena, mounting a challenge to Carvalho for the 5th Suffolk District seat with posts on Facebook and Twitter. Residents of the Dorchester district will likely see Henriquez or a volunteer handing out literature when they show up to vote in the March 1 presidential primary.
