Jerald Walker

Associate professor Jerald Walker has been named interim chair of Emerson College’s Writing, Literature and Publishing (WLP) Department. His term begins Aug. 15, 2011.

Walker came to Emerson in the fall of 2010 to teach in the WLP Department. He received his doctorate in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Iowa, combining the fields of African American literature, African American history and creative writing. Prior to arriving at Emerson, he was an associate professor of English at Bridgewater State University.

A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Walker won the 2011 PEN New England/L.L. Winship Award for Nonfiction and Best Memoir of the Year by Kirkus Reviews for Street Shadows: A Memoir of Race, Rebellion, and Redemption. He has published in magazines such as Creative Nonfiction, The Missouri Review, The Harvard Review, Mother Jones, The IowaReview and The Oxford American.

Walker has been a visiting professor in the Program in Writing and Humanistic Studies at MIT and in the MFA in Nonfiction Program at the University of Iowa.
