Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino recently appointed state Rep. Marie St. Fleur as the chief of advocacy and strategic investment. As such, St. Fleur will coordinate education, job creation and other initiatives supported by local, state and federal programs and investments.
“Our efforts to turn around our schools, create job opportunities and invest in all Bostonians require unprecedented coordination,” Mayor Menino said. “Rep. St. Fleur will be an effective advocate from the White House to Beacon Hill to the streets of Boston…”
St. Fleur will also guide the city’s Haiti-related efforts and lead a new re-entry initiative focused on youth and adults who have been part of the criminal justice system.
“I care deeply about Boston’s communities and the opportunities our residents have,” St. Fleur said. “I’m so pleased to be able to speak on their behalf and to campaign for reforms that help them.”
St. Fleur, who previously announced that she would not seek re-election, will start in early June. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, St. Fleur earned a law degree from Boston College Law School in 1987. She was elected to the 5th Suffolk District in 1999 and is believed to be the first Haitian American elected to state office in the United States.
