“Sugar Shack,” one of Ernie Barnes’ most famous paintings, appeared on the cover of Marvin Gaye’s “I Want You” in 1976 and in the closing credits of the television show “Good Times.” Barnes, 70, an African American painter and a former NFL player, died April 28, 2009, at a hospital in Los Angeles of complications from a rare blood disorder.
