Upon learning that just over one-third of students from the Boston Public Schools (BPS) class of 2000 had earned a college degree as of 2007, Mayor Thomas M. Menino challenged the local educational community to step its collective game up. The mayor called for a 50 percent increase in the graduate rate for students from the BPS class of ’09 and a 100 percent increase — meaning double the graduates — for students set to finish high school in the year 2011.
