Based in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston and nearly 200 years old, the UU Urban Ministry is one of the oldest social service organizations in the country. The mission of the UU Urban Ministry is to unite communities and transform individuals through education, service, and advocacy. We are a multi-service agency focused on education and enrichment, domestic violence shelter and services, and community engagement and development.

The UU Urban Ministry has an immediate job opening for a full-time Director of Believe in Success, a new bi-lingual (Spanish and English) job- and educational-readiness program for low-income women/LGBTQ persons who have experienced domestic violence or other trauma. The mission of this 20-hour-per-week classroom/experiential program is to provide a set of skills that enable participants to be successful in taking their next step in life, whether that’s entry-level work, skills-based training programs, or two- or four-year colleges.

The Believe in Success curriculum focuses on the fundamentals, such as conflict resolution, working as a team, decision-making, and financial literacy and other life skills. The program surrounds participants with services that include counseling, support groups, advocacy, and opportunities to build social/support networks.

The Director will take the lead on finalizing program development for a September launch, serve as the lead teacher/mentor for participants, develop and train volunteers, and recruit and hire new staff to support Believe in Success.

The ideal candidate will

  • Be bilingual in English/Spanish
  • Be passionate about service work
  • Have experience in developing and/or managing programming in areas related to domestic violence or other trauma
  • Have experience in non-profits, preferably with a social work background and expertise in working with individuals who have experienced trauma/violence/abuse.
  • Be a “connector” who is enthusiastic about helping participants build social networks and helping the program build collaborative partnerships.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Have knowledge of restorative/transformative practices in working with individuals who have experienced trauma
  • Have experience supervising staff and volunteers
  • Be computer literate.

A Master’s Degree in social work or divinity/theology preferred and/or comparable work experience with individuals in crisis. This position reports to the Associate Director.

Individuals of all cultures, colors, sexual orientations and gender identities encouraged to apply. Bilingual (Spanish/English) necessary.

Competitive salary and excellent benefits.
